I have always wanted to own a Siberian Husky. There is something so graceful, upright and noble in its carriage and bearing. Unluckily, I have never been able to own the dog (since it comes with a Rs 1 lakh + price tag in India). Other than patting the few that come my way at the Chennai dog shows, I have not been able to really get close to my favourite dog breed.
My first introduction to Huskies came while I was reading Call of the Wild by Jack London. The images the books conjured were spell-binding – beautiful, furry half-wolves, forging their way in the Arctic cold; furry feet running on soft snow, the struggle between civilisation and the wild. In the North, Siberian Huskies are primarily used as working dogs. They were used to ferry people and goods across the vast, white expanse of the Arctic pole. White Fang, was another book of Jack London’s in which Siberian Huskies figure; though the hero of the novel is actually a half-bred wolf.
Now you might wonder what a dog, which was named Siberian Husky, was doing in Alaska? Well with the Nome Gold Rush in the US and Canada, many gold diggers used these dogs to pull sleds while they hunted for gold.
But being the extremely handsome dog that it is, it soon became a show dog and a family pet. And that’s how the poor thing which was bred to battle the severe northern cold, found its way to tropical
India. Go to any Indian dog show, and the richest idiot there will be sporting a Siberian Husky. So far the half-a-dozen Siberian huskies I have met at the Chennai dog shows, spent the whole three days of the event in their AC trailers. They stepped out for a brief 15 minutes at the show ring and for another brief 5 minutes to receive the awards before they were hustled back into their AC trailers.
The poor things are carted all the way from Ooty (where again they are kept in royal seclusion in AC rooms during the summer) to attend the dog show in hot, dry Chennai.
Siberian Huskies come from the Spitz family as do Pomeranians. I had a lovely white spitz
myself named Achu (Watch out for the Life and Times of Achu, in the coming posts)
Many people accuse Pomeranians of being nasty and short tempered. Well, so would I be If I had long, thick lovely hair, ideal for the northern climes, but forced to live in Tamil Nadu; where even the native Rajapalayams, Chippiparais and Kannis feel the heat.
All the spitz varities – Akita, Malamute, Keeshond, Laika, etc, have a wolfish look and are very handsome dogs.
The first time I saw a Siberian Husky, I wondered if it had some kind of deficiency, but it was only later that I realised that pure-bred Huskies can have different coloured eyes. Accentuating its wolfish tendencies, this dog prefers to howl rather than bark.
But there are also other issues which arise, for instance many people adopt huskies seeing its good looks. But if they don’t have the time and energy to keep their dog usefully engaged, this hyper-active dog can become destructive. This is the reason, why many Alsatians/German Shepherds (There is actually a very interesting story as to why GSDs came to be called Alsations) and Dalmatians, which owners initially choose for their good looks end up in dog homes. People don’t realise that working dogs can get easily bored and restless if they are cooped up in small flats without exercise.
Siberian Huskies have also lost out on the dog-racing front to hybrid breeds like the Alaskan Husky, which are faster and have less hair. Nowadays you can spot the Siberian husky only in dog shows, recreational mushing or in homes.
Watching Walt Disney’s Eight Below, I was again filled with longings for this beautiful dog of the snowy regions.

Beautiful!! I’m in the process of painting a Siberian Husky and they are a beautiful breed!!!
Good morning, we loved your website on Huskies it was great.
We looked it up because we love the dogs, and also because my son Sean (age 8) is playing the part of a Huskie Dog pulling the christmas sligh for the elevs on christmas day.
Thanks again for the great website,
Dolores and Sean Crowley.
Hi Dolores,
The really, really sad part is that I can never hope to have Siberian Huskies as pets coz I stay in hot, humid Chennai.
Do you have a blog? (I’m asking too many people this question these days).
If your son really loves Siberian Huskies, then he should read Jack London’s Call of the Wild & White Fang.
I loved those books as a kid!
Lov,
Rachel
I rescued a siberian that was about to be sent to a shelter here in Virginia, she is the most intelligent and loving animal I have seen. I respect your decision not to import one to your hot climate. I intend to move to Idaho where the climate is more suited to me and my new friend, as well as having lower taxes!.
Hi Chris,
Wow! Whats your dog’s name? Are you going to breed her?
Do you work with animals? I used to be a volunteer at the zoo here. Actually Siberian Huskies are available in India; but they largely lead cloistered lifes. They have become something like the poodle; having to spend their whole life in the air-conditioned drawing rooms of upper-middle class homes.
Also out of curiousity, has the economic slowdown afffected your part of the country?
Regards
Rachel

Hello! What a great website. I’m so sorry you aren’t able to own a husky, but I totally respect your decision due to the hot climate. They are a wonderful breed and I hope to have another one someday.
I owned a husky mix. Blood tests showed she was 85% husky, 10% German Shepherd and the other 5% was another large breed they couldn’t positively identify, but believed it was an Alaskan Malamute.
To look at her, though, she looked full-blooded husky and had the characteristics of a husky. Both eyes were blue and she looked very much like the picture of the single-dog with her head turned you have on your website.
She was an explorer and that is a husky trait. When she did get off her leash, she loved to just wander and roam.
Also, another fact I learned in owning her, husky’s don’t have good peripheral vision. They have more of a tunnel vision because of the breeding to be sled dogs. If you live in the city or near a busy road and they get in the road, that can be very dangerous. Crossing the road unless they turn their head they won’t see oncoming cars.
They are great with children. Most of the things I’ve read say they are not really good watch dogs as they are too friendly with people. Nakita was so friendly with strangers when we walked her on her leash or when we allowed people into the home. But she did show signs of protectiveness – not aggression, just protectiveness of both my husband and myself. I always wondered if that was the shepherd coming out.
Also, they must be groomed a lot. But they are so loving and wonderful to have. I’d have another one if possible, but having moved into an apartment with a no pet clause in the lease keeps me from having one.
The best thing you can do if you do get a husky is to have some training. They will drag you around while on a leash unless you train them young. And don’t let the size fool you, they are bred to pull sleds and are so very strong. My husband is 6’5″ and 300 pounds and at times it was all he could do to hold her, especially when she saw a rabbit – she loved to chase rabbits!
She passed away in October 2005 and I really miss her so very much.
HI. I have three “winter” dogs. Indie, a shepherd/elkhound mix female that resembles a small wolf with her grey, whitish and black fur. Gohan, a white samoyed husky male that I found online at Huskycamp.com, located in Phelan, California. He has a pink nose a golden eyes and a very sweet endearing personality. Tala, my female siberian, was given to me at 5.5 months old by my sister and her husband when their Wolf, Lucky, disliked her because she was so aggressive as a pup. She has been a handful. She loved to run off for hours and when walking on the local bike path, she would see a dogwalker approaching, run forward, then crouch until they were closer, then rush full speed at the other dog. She’s not mean, but just has to perform this “Alpha” routine. Otherwise, she’s very loving. When nothing else worked, I had to resort to using a light shock collar for a bit. It worked, and she comes when I call her to put her back on lead. She and Gohan play rough, like wolves, but otherwise love each other to death.
My sister’s newest female siberian gets along well with Lucky….and they sleep on the bed together. I live in an Idaho ski area at 6000 feet, so having dogs like these is easy. Three clear and cold rivers for them to play and soak in, and lots of forest land to roam in, away from cars. I also have a high 6-7 foot fence with a two foot chicken wire extension for when Tala would try to climb out, which she did, using a bush that I had to cut down. She is smart and opens the sliding door, etc. The others don’t. Facebook me….
Rod,
I am sorry for the delay in replying. I am going through a major upheavel of sorts
.
I loved reading about your dogs. I envy you – would love to have a Siberian husky too.
On Facebook, I am rachelchit@hotmail.com……

I have a huskie of my own. She is beautiful and is a pure white colour. she is a siberian breed. My dog minty lays in the sun all day… when its really hot but she doesn’t really feel it! I take my dog for walks and she pulls me along. Minty does not bite nor jump she only jumps when she is excited to go for a walk. Huskies have a great nature and is an ideal pet to have.

))
I’m about to get my first husky sometime this week. I’m very excited!
But i’m also very nervous, because i don’t know what to expect. She’s full grown already. I want her as an inside dog, but i don’t know where to start training since she is already five. The friend giving her to me said she is somewhat potty trained, but not really.
any tips at all for those who have huskies would be greatly appreciated.
if it helps just to know, i live in a climate that is usually hot. south texas.
thanks
Hi Rachel,
Your website is very intersting. I live in Canada, and I own myself a husky. It really is a wonderfull dog.
I was a little shocked reading your article because I never thought people could have winter dogs in climates like India. Of course this breed is very attracting, but people should understand that having an animal means understanding and filling it’s needs. Huskies have a lot of energy and a very heavy fur, so it’s unthinkable to keep them inside in a hot climate. I’m glad to see that you have interstand that, and you should spread the word around you !!!
What kind of dogs are in the first picture and the second picture? Because the second pic looks like a Siberian Husky, but the first pic looks different then just a usual Siberian? Please help me, I’ve seen these pics before and found them SO beautiful! I’d love to find out and get one!
I landed here by clicking on a link in my blog stats. I don’t know why it took me here, but I’m glad I came. You have a beautiful site and I love Sibes. But good for you not to want to subject a dog to a totally different environment that he was not bred for.
That’s a wonderful movie; eight below!!!! realy !!! i love it and i had sniksniksniksnik
What a very nice site !!! Telling all about de nicest dog on earth. I’m living in Holland. The last two winters were very strong, so a huskie must feel very happy here. The place i live has very much ope fields. I think the time has come to live with the dog i love so very much. Also my wife is very charmed about the huskie.
At the moment we have a beagle, named Kyra. She is a very nice dog and very gentle to children. i’m sure she can live very good with a huskie. She is running the whole time and loves to play in the snow.
I would the time was there i can tell also stories about our huskie. I’m sure the time is there very soon. I will stay in contact.
Greetz, Kees
I am getting one soon his name will be Cyrus. PS. I am part wolf. Haha just kidding. Or am I…. O:
Hi Rachel,
Really good topic for blog and the narration was too good.
I live in Sydney. Will be back to chennai, India in next year. Made some research abt the Husky and came to know that Husky will not suit my climate. Felt sad!!!!!!!
Now i started collecting the Husky pictures. Daily watching husky as Mobile/Laptop Wallpapers…
Husky bred owners should be lucky and have happy moments with husky.
Cheers
I have two huskies male and female.
The male is a hybrid, 83 pounds and 27 inches tall (mother was Alaskan grey father pure husky). He is extremely handsome and powerful. He can pull a 250 pound sled three miles by himself, but prefers companionship of other dogs.
The female is short and stocky, 19 inches and 57 pounds, but she is the boss and thinks the boy is her chew toy.
Given that all dogs evolved from wolfs you can see why the husky and malamute are so striking better looking than other dog breeds. All other breeds have more mutations from their origin, thereby lost much of Mother Nature’s centuries of honing.
Looking at the picture of the seven puppies above I prefer the one with the dark black mask. This is what my boy looked like when he was two pounds.
Thanks for the great pics! They look cool on my power point!
Huskies are the smartest, most charismatic dogs you will find. Mine was a gray wolf hybrid named Logan. I had her for 16 years until her back legs gave out on her. She wasn’t fond of kids or other animals but I suppose that was my fault. I never disciplined or trained her other than to let me know when she needed to “go outside”. When I would take her to the park, I had to make sure no other pets were there. When we went to the beach, she got along with all the other dogs. Guess it was a territorial thing. I liked her wolfy personality. She would howl every time I came home from work (woo-woo-woooo). I learned very quickly how caring for her would be almost as demanding as a child. Long silver and black hair all over EVERYTHING. Very picky about her food. Looking back at me by my bedroom door, telling me it was our bedtime. Waking me up every morning by pawing my arm cuz she had to go outside. lol. She could speak, howl, dance, roll over, shake hands and jump all on command. I don’t think I’ll ever have another dog but If you’re contemplating getting one, you couldn’t make a better choice.
Dear Rachel, Sorry for the great delay. I somehow lost track of your site. We’re having a wet and cool spring in Sun Valley, Idaho. Temps have been down to 26 degf, but are rising into the high 30′s at night. My beautiful Indie left us (cervical bone cancer) in June 2009, but Tala the Sibe and Gohan the Sammie are fine. They had to do without walks due to my achilles tendon operation. Luckily, a friend has been driving us out to riverside walks.
My sister in California may adopt another Sibe, since their 13 year old wolf Lucky is becoming weaker. Check out BASH (Bay Area Siberian Huskies.com) for some possibles for adoption. I’m sorry that you can’t be adopted by a husky due to your domicile. You sound like the perfect person for a Sibe. Caring, and aware of Sibe peculiarities…
i have a Siberian husky i saved her when she was a puppy her name is shelley i saved her from someone who was going to kill her or put her in the pound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Rachel, It’s been a while since our “conversation” in 2008. Since then, my beautiful Indie, the shepherd/elkhound, had to be let go because she developed incurable cervical bone cancer. I slept on the floor with her the last few nights. She rests in the forest with my other dogs. We miss her so. Tala the Sibe and Gohan the Sammy are healthy and they enjoyed romping in last winter’s snows. But in early May I released both our one of our canyons, and they disappeared for 4.5 hours; I received a cell call from mtn biking friends that they were back at the trail head waiting for me…filthy and wet, but happy.
I just brushed the equivalent of a soccer ball full of fur off Gohan this morning. A fistfull off Tala the other day. If I were to combine all the dog fur so far this year, I could build another dog! But I give the fur to a friend and she spins and weaves it…making sweaters and hats. She made a nice “Sherpa” hat for me..cone shaped with ear flaps that I can only wear when it’s below zero in F. temp. Gohan usually jumps first onto the bed and sleeps next to my head. Sometime during the night there is a “changing of the guards”, and Tala will then be next to me. Needless to say, I am usually known for my furry attire. But I distrust anyone who visibly cringes away from me and is afraid to get hair on their clothing. Dog people are more accepting. It’s just a matter of what color hair one prefers….
Hi, Rachel,
Another winter has descended upon us in the mtns of Central Idaho, where we’ll probably see more of Arnold again, having given up the governancy. Unlike the past three years, we are finally getting a more normal winter with lots of snow. Snowboarding and skiing are in full swing on our Bald mtn. I have taught a few ski and board lessons, and it appears that the holidays will again be busy.
I wish I could send you some of our cold temperatures and some sibe hair to make you feel more “with it”. But that’s why, as humans, we have been given the ability to dream in our minds about what in closer reality we cannot have or experience. You have more feeling for Sibes that people that live in places like the mountains of Idaho, who don’t appreciate them. Trust me. Rod
hi Rachel, your post and below comments has widen my husky’s understanding. I also really wanted to own a husky, but afraid to get him/her lonely. Read your post about bitten by dogs too, that was interesting. Glad you’re still love in dogs. I’m lil bit interested in labrador now. Cause it will fit the climate where I live. Check this out. Sad that there isn’t husky
