Pomeranians are such wonderful, friendly, generous and lovable creatures. Yet, I don’t why there is so much bad press about them that they are mean, little dogs, who shed truckloads of hair, bark, snap, bite and have bad tempers.
I have had one Pomeranian and associated with many of these creatures and have never once been bitten by these dogs or found them any less lovable.
Shedding hair
Pomeranians do have long hair and shed copious amounts of it during the summer. Since the breed is imported, it has never really got acclimatized to the Indian heat. I have known Pomeranians that have shed hair all round the year in India; because here the seasons are really not distinct and even during the monsoon the temperature is quite high and humid.
We had a Spitz named Achu, which was also long-haired so experience speaks. If you don’t want the dog’s hair all over the place and circulating in the air every time you switch on the fan then you should groom it well. A good grooming every morning with a rough, big toothed comb and then another fine brushing with a smaller-toothed comb will ensure that you don’t have hair all over the place. Also the regular brushing increases the blood flow under the skin and keeps Ur dog’s hair shining and glossy. During the periods of high hair fall, you must brush the dog twice a day and try giving it a bath once a week to weed out dead hair.
Poms bark all the time
I grant it to you Pomeranians are high spirited creatures, but that is one of the characteristics of the breed. You wouldn’t want a sheep herding collie to suddenly start imitating a blood hound, would you? Alsations are versatile dogs; they can be guide dogs for the blind, deaf, therapy dogs, police dogs, sniffer dogs, army dogs and companion dogs. But not every dog can be a multi-tasker like the GSD. Dogs are bred for certain distinct purposes and there are inherent characteristics of the breed. Some dogs are one-man dogs or loners like the Afghan hound. Others like the Siberian Husky, the Alaskan Malamute or the Samoyed excel in team work and are working dogs.
But dogs never bark unless they want your attention, are upset about something or want to alert you. With its high spirits and intelligence, your average Pomeranian does get bored cooped up in the house. It will not lazily sink to complacency and fatness like the Labrador. When it doesn’t get any other avenue of expending its energy or when not properly socialized, it does bark a lot. That’s the owner’s fault, not the dog’s or the breed’s.
Pomeranians are not irritable, unless you irritate them. How would you like it if some stranger on the street suddenly patted ur head? You will snap. And so will the dog.
Never touch a dog because its wagging its tail at you. Dogs wag their tails when they are excited, curious and a little afraid. You must first let the dog sniff you and then place your hand on its chest or shoulders. Directly putting ur hand on its head, makes it fear ur trying to subdue it and it will retaliate or shy away. Its also seen as an act of dominance by the dog.
The dog will also feel more comfortable, if you bend down to its level and pat it.
Most people seeing a nice, cute, pretty, little Pomeranian, forget its a live thing with feelings. They try squeezing it, carrying it and molly-coddling to its great displeasure. And when it snaps, they label all poms “small and mean.” Shucks! Su unfair!
I love my little girl, she seems to be a bit slow in the potty training, but she is very loveable and she only barks once in awhile. We are still working on the barking. I have had Missy since she was 6 weeks old, she went everywhere I went until I had to go back to work, she hates for me to leave her. I honestly don’t know what I would do without my pom! She is very special! Thanks, Linda
Pomeranians have got to be the cutest dogs in the whole world. I have two, and they are so precious. Here’s a post that describes their natures and proclivities and picture of them. http://www.newrinkles.com/index.php/archive/pomeranians-miniature-sled-dogs/

I love my pom. Yes, they are a little bit bratty & feisty. That is part of their charm. They are bossy little dogs with an attitude. Never a dull moment with a pom. They are so much fun & they love people. Good with kids too.
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww thats so adorable!!!!!!!
THOSE DOGS ARE SH1THOUSE
Hi
I am an absolute lover of pomeranians, Eric is my second and he is so special I am a Japanese writer and i was so touched by Eric that I wrote a book about him. The title is “My Name Is Eric” a real tribute to a very special pomeranian who does not believe he is not human! This book will warm the hearts of pomeranian and dog lovers in general and it’s available at http://www.amazon.com and some bookstores in the US published by Hannacroix Creeks Books of Connecticut. The Asian publishers and I have pledged part of the proceeds to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) its the least Eric can do to contribute to the less fortunate dogs! Pass the word around !
Regards and fellow pom lover

I LOVE POMS, I WILL ALWAYS HAVE ONE IN MY LIFETIME. THEY ARE THE MOST SPUNKY JOYFULL LOVABLE LITTLE THINGS YOU WILL EVER KNOW. THEY ARE LIKE LITTLE KIDS WITH FUR COATS, FULL OF LOVE AND LAUGHTER.
I recently decided to purchase a dog and after doing some research decided that I wanted to get a pom, upon telling others of my decision I got a lot of negative responses about the breed. I was told that they bark excessively, their mean, and not good with children. I must say after reading this I think that I am going to stick to my original decision and get a pom! Thanks a lot.
Hi Kita,
I’m so glad u’ve decided to adopt a pom.. They’re sweet-natured dogs with intense strains of loyalty towards their owners. They are also very good with kids and unlike a german shepherd or Husky – these guys dont have the weight to accidently injure kids injure kids while playing with them. And plus poms are low-maintenance in terms of exercise and adjustability to new surroundings. I hope u have a wonderful time with ur dog,
Cheers,
Rachel

I have had the good fortune in life to have had two Pomeranians. The first was a male that my mother brought into our house when I was a child. Roughhouse was a puppy and we raised him to be a fine companion. He brought much joy into our home. As an adult I was blessed with a female Pom that I named Foxy. I got her when she was about one year old and now she is fourteen years old. She is known to steal the heart of everyone who meets her and everyone I know is always eager to visit knowing Foxy will be there to great them with sparkling eyes and wagging tail! We have bonded to each other and I can not imagine my life without her. She has been a true joy to have as a “friend”, I say friend because she is more than just a pet to me. Always gentle with children and accepting of other pets she is a true treasure! Alert, intelligent, loving, and playful, Pomeranians make excellent companion dogs for those who will put in the time to raise them properly. Highly recommended in the proper home setting!
I have had poms since I was 18 years old. I am now 70 and I have four poms at this time in my life. Mr. Black Genie, Tisha, Duke, Bear, Apache, Amber, Ginger, Teddy, Snookie, Rusty have places in my heart.. Those who have gone before me, I know are waiting at heaven”s gate. Soon to pick up my next pom, Lacey, who, like my others, have stolen my heart.
Buddy has been part of our family since September 2010 when we adopted him from a shelter. We had gone there to adopt a cat since two of our died last year 4 months apart. While deciding little Buddy ran to us and jumped onto my wife with a sweet look as to say “plaese take me home” of course he was tilting his head like poms can. We adopted him and have loved him ever since. We take almost everywhere we travel as there are many dog friendly hotels and cities.
.
I just started to help out at a breeder’s kennels. They raise Pomeranians. I was a bit apprehensive to start off with, but that didn’t last very long. They are sweet dogs who just love attention. They have touched my heart… and changed my mind.
I have a black Pomeranian. He does not growl or snap or bite, not even if some one suddenly petted him! He’s friendly towards other Dogs and people. But he hardly sheds excpet in the beginning of summer and winter. He’s currently getting grey in some areas.
I had my one and only pom, who was the sweetest sweetest sweetest dog ever. I got her at 18 months old, and know that she had a litter die inside of her and the breeder was looking for a home. She had been raised in a kennel and well never got the hang of house breaking. She was great on her schedule, but if she had to go, she went. Fortunately it was so little it was easy to clean, but that is my worry about Poms. I am not planning to get one soon, but down the road when I am retired, I think I will. So how do I make sure she is as sweet as my Honey was? How do I make sure she learns to go outside only? And how do I teach her not to bark all the time? Maybe if I am home all the time it will be more natural. Any advice? Especially about house training?
